      BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.79 percent to 2,924.2 points.

      The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.81 percent higher at 9,228.55 points.

      HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed up 303.74 points, or 1.07 percent, to 28,765.4 points on Friday.

      The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 28,551.2 and 28,809.59. Turnover totaled 67.58 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 8.65 billion U.S. dollars).

      SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks closed higher on Friday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going up 0.5 percent, or 16.91 points, to close at 3,377.96.

      A total of 1.48 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 1.11 billion Singapore dollars (about 816.76 million U.S. dollars). Gainers outnumbered losers by 244 to 168.

      TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed sharply higher Friday as sentiment being lifted by solid performances on overseas bourses saw investors take to buying back issues deemed oversold during the market's three-day downturn.

      The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average climbed 420.75 points, or 2.0 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 21,466.99.

      MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed lower Friday. Benchmark indices ended at two-month low on July 19 after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman dashed hope of a tweak in FPI surcharge. Continued asset quality concerns in Q1 also spooked markets.

      HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh City bourse in southern Vietnam, closed at 982.34 points on Friday, up 6.29 points, or 0.64 percent against the previous trading day.

      Over 170.265 million shares worth 4.002 trillion Vietnamese dong (174 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange.

      South Korea's currency finished at 1,174.5 won against the greenback, up 4.3 won from the previous close.

      WELLINGTON -- New Zealand stock market's indicator, the S&P/NZX 50 index, jumped slightly by 0.11 percent to 10,753 on Friday.

      The jump was led by Good Spirits Hospitality Limited, an investment company focusing on New Zealand's hospitality sector. It went up by 13.64 percent to 0.125 NZ dollars (0.085 U.S. dollars), while Future Mobility Solutions Limited, which manufactures amphibious marine craft, dropped by 6.15 percent to 0.061 NZ dollars.
