RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Veteran Corinthians midfielder Andre Carrillo will undergo surgery after suffering ligament damage to his left ankle, the Brazilian Serie A club said on Thursday.
The 34-year-old Peru international sustained the injury during Corinthians' 2-0 win at Palmeiras in the Copa do Brasil round of 16 second leg on Wednesday. He attempted to play on but was substituted early in the second half.
Subsequent scans revealed the need for surgery, which is scheduled for the coming days, Corinthians said in a statement.
Corinthians forward Memphis Depay is also likely to spend time on the sidelines after being forced off with an injury in Wednesday's match.
"Memphis has a grade two tear to his right hamstring," Corinthians said in the same statement. "He has begun recovery work with the physiotherapy department."
The Sao Paulo-based club did not share an estimated return date for either player.
Medical experts say Depay's injury usually requires a recovery period of four to eight weeks while Carrillo is likely to miss the rest of the season. ■
