State funeral held for former Romanian President Ion Iliescu

BUCHAREST, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Former Romanian President Ion Iliescu was laid to rest with state and military honours on Thursday at the Ghencea III Military Cemetery in Bucharest.

Iliescu passed away on Tuesday at the age of 95, after spending 57 days hospitalized at Agrippa Ionescu Hospital.

He served as Romania's president from 1990 to 1992, 1992 to 1996, and again from 2000 to 2004.

Dignitaries, including former presidents Emil Constantinescu and Traian Basescu, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, and several cabinet ministers, attended the ceremony to pay their respects. ■
